My Official 2009 Oscar Predictions

Now, being the indecisive person that I am, I reserve the right to change my mind on any of these before Sunday. If I do, I will announce the changes here. Because The Hurt Locker winning 3 and Avatar winning 5 just doesn't feel right to me. I think we may see a shakeup in the sound categories, but I don't have the guts to officially predict that yet. On Art Direction, how did you come to your conclusion? I am having a hard time on this category. In a way I think your right that Avatar might just win most of the technical awards based on the fact that many voters don't really know what's going on. The only proof we need of that is the tendency of the Academy to always award Sound Editing and Sound Mixing to the same film year after year. However since the majority of the set design on the this film is the work of a man behind a computer is it really good art direction, or do you think it will simply be part of a trend to go all Avatar all night in the tech categories? On another note I am a little bit surprised in your preference for Bigelow. Weren't you the one guy, saying that Avatar is a better film the The Hurt Locker. To me not only is Bigelow not worthy of the prize this time, but there is nothing in her body of work that one could call great either.

I agree about AVATAR's art direction, which is why I did not nominate it myself in my own Front Row Awards. I went back and forth on in honestly, but I ended up going with it because I just don't know what would beat it. YOUNG VICTORIA maybe? I just don't see it. And AVATAR is pretty so there's that. I just kept imagining them showing those concept drawings as they announce the nominees as they often do and thinking if you go by that, AVATAR wins.

And yes I did say AVATAR is a better film than THE HURT LOCKER, and I stand by that. But really, how can you not root for Bigelow?
